First Traffic Ticket with many violations

What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state?
California

Hello, my name is Steve and im recently turned 18. i got a very serious ticket yesterday nite coming home from work. I was speeding 80 on a 35 and the other violation was crossing the double yellow line. The reason for this wasnt becasue i was racing the guy on purpose, it was becasue i was trying to get away from the guy i was, according to the officers, racing with. He was speeding and getting really close to my car so i panicked and began speeding to get away because i didnt know what he wanted. the more i sped the closer he got. THen i made a sharp turn and went on the other lane...finally then the cops pulled me over.

This is the first time i ever received a ticket after a 1 yr and half of having my license.

I would like to know how much this will cost and if i can get a reduction and do commmunity service for it becasue the reason i was out that nite was becasue of work which i got to pay for college since my parents cant afford it.

One more question, will the judge let me tell him my story?

Yes, the judge probably will allow you to tell your story IF you want to risk this at trial. I have to tell you, though, that he is not likely to buy it.

Did you report this to the police that stopped you? Was this other car behind you or beside you? What did the officers there say?

My guess is that they are going to contend that this was a race and not a chase.

You can tell your story but I doubt a judge is going to believe it any more than I do.

Also, traffic school will not be an option here.

Good luck.

Why didn't you just pull off the road and let the other driver get away from you?

Someone here said traffic school not an option. I disagree. If you take the ticket to trial, the judge can grant it if he wants to, no matter what the ticket says. The cop can't tell him what to do.

You also have an excellent chance that the officer will not show up for trial.

80 in a 35 ... Traffic School is not an option by statute. The cop can't tell him what to do, but the law sure can.

Not in the other 57 counties in CA.
