Harsher charge if pleading not guilty?

What is the name of your state? West Virginia

If I ask the judge to plea to a lesser charge, for a minor speeding ticket, and he declines, could I just plead not guilty? Wouldn't that be in my best interest? Could the judge sentence me harsher than what is already writen on the ticket?
