I-94 Expiry Driving License extension problem

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I live in California. I currently have a I-94 which is expired on 13th Oct 08. My company has filed for an extension of my L1A blanket and the same has been received by USCIS. My driver license is also expired on 13th Oct. So, when I went to DMV to get the extension done based on my petition receipt document, they rejected the extension request.

I would like to know if there is anyway to extend the Driver License beyond the I-94 expiry date based on the petition receipt for L1A Extension? I have been informed that I can stay for a period of upto 240 days beyond my Visa expiry date subject to approval or rejection of my extension request by USCIS. But, DMV wanted some document which allows me this same period of 240 days subject to the decision on the petition.

Has anybody been able to overcome this technicality for driver license extension in CA?

Thanks
Kale
