Illinois School bus law...ticket...HELP

A couple of weeks ago, I got a ticket for passing a stopped school bus. DeKalb County Illinois. I was told that I had to go to court for this. The court date is Thurs Nov. 8th. Coming up this week. I was planning on going in, stating what happened. Today got a letter in the mail saying that this is a "serious traffic offense" and there is a mantatory fine of $150 and suspension of license.

I dont feel that I did anything wrong. It was an accident, I thought that the bus was going to stop at the railroad tracks that I had just crossed, but as I came next to the bus, the bus then stopped, and put out the stop sign. There was no way that I could have stopped, so I continued at my speed of 25-30 miles per hour. A police car came off a side street on my right, slightly behind me, and I dont feel that he could have seen whether I was past the bus or not, before the sign came out.

I was an honest mistake, I had my kids in the car with me, It was 5:00 in the evening, the cop kept me pulled over for 20-25 minutes, making me late to pick up my 4th kid, and someone else taking her home, to where I was not, and having to look all over town for her! I am a 28 year old married mom with 4 children.

It was a horrible experience, and I am now freaking out because of this letter that some lawyer sent me....technically an advertisement, but what is going to happen at court? Should I take a lawyer with me...(cannot really afford...) HELP! What should I do???

Thank You for any advice!

Any idea of what is going to happen when I get there? I noticed today that if I was planning on pleading not guilty I should have sent something in a couple of weeks ago. So now, I am just making myself sick to my stomach. I am afraid to call a lawyer.

Either talk to a lawyer or you'll be facing a judge.

Ohio. There's that crummy advice again. If you honestly believe you've been unfairly ticketed. Fight back! Go to the library and look up one of a hundred books on how to beat a traffic ticket. Read it. Request a trial. Represent yourself. Don't plea bargain. (maybe). Request a retrial. Appeal to a higher court! They're gonna suspend your license anyway! Don't go down without a fight! Cost 'em some money!
