Question

Interstate Compact re: Points

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Currently Michigan, moving to Arizona

I am moving from Michigan to Arizona in July. Once I arrive in Arizona, I plan to get my Arizona Driver's License so I can work in the state. I have several points on my Michigan License from moving violations and want to know if they will transfer to my new Arizona License. Arizona is part of the DMV Compact, Michigan is not. Will my points transfer (and if yes, why)?

Thank you. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

The compact doesn't really cover this. It's up to Arizona. I suspect however you may get a clean slate there. Of course, your insurance company already knows about your record.

Its true that Michigan is a non-party state in the DLC however, Arizona's view on that is that they still, if they choose to exercise the right to inquire, have the right to know if their laws require knowledge of that info prior to approving your request for a AZ license...

Arizona State Legilature
Title 28 - Transportation
Chapter 6 AGREEMENTS AND COMPACTS
Article 3 Driver License Compact
Article VI Applicability of Other Laws
Except as expressly required by provisions of this compact, nothing contained herein shall be construed to affect the right of any party state to apply any of its other laws relating to licenses to drive to any person or circumstance nor to invalidate or prevent any driver license agreement or other cooperative arrangement between a party state and a non-party state.

And since we know AZ does usually check the record of an out of state license holder, they can apply that to Michigan. Who knows they might, they might not!

My advice: call a MVD office local to the area you'll be moving to and ask them what will happen.
