New York State can't find my ticket?!

This is a semi complicated story so I will provide as many details as possible.

Up until January of this year I was living in Vermont. I have a Vermont driver's license and car registartion.

In the middle of January I moved to New Jersey. All of my mailed is being forwarded from Vermont to New Jersey and I have been getting my mail without problems. (In fact, I still have friends living at my old place so they monitor the mail that arrives and make sure my mail is forwarded.)

In April I returned to Vermont for a visit and received a speeding ticket in New York on I-87, a state patroled road, for going appoximately 83 in a 65.

Later in April I sent my ticket, pleading guilty, into the designated New York Court. I was awaiting a bill so I would know how much my fine would be.

To date I have not received anything from New York State. I have called the Motor Vehicle department there twice and they can not find my ticket in their system. They keep telling me to wait. Unfortuantely they can't search for my ticket by anything other than name and date of birth so if there was a typing error somewhere it won't show.

I want to officially move to New Jersey, i.e. get a driver's license here, change my car registration and insurance. Even though it will be more costly, I'd like to vote and be a resident for other things.

I am curious if anything can anticipate what would happen if I went to the NJ DMV and applied for a license. Would this ticket show and could I be arrested? Also, what should I tell an insurance agent as I apply for quotes? I do not want to lie nor do I wish to provide more frustration in this process.

Any advice is appreciated.

Catherine

I say go ahead and get your NJ license and registration, submitting your VT license and registration. Let NY go fish. It is not your responsibility to force or even help NY to do their job. There is a caveat to this, however: it may pop up unexpectedly years from now. Just be sure that you have proof of your actions, the mailings and phone calls, even if it’s just contemporaneous notes and a copy of your original post in this thread. As far as telling the NJ insurance agent anything, there is nothing official to tell. The citation has not been resolved and won’t be until you pay it or contest it. The agent will pull your VT driver’s license record and use that
