nj hit and run

In New jersey, I received a ticket for hit and run. The reason I had left the scene was b/c I had felt the work van at 9PM in front
of me stopped on purpose since he had already yeilded to enter a highway and then stopped short while there were no cars coming. Before I left, there was no damage to his van so I left. Approx. 10 miles from the scene I was pulled over, questioned, car searched, and given a ticket for hit and run.
My car is from Fl. and I had been packed to drive home that (FL) night. The van had no damage (from police report) and is suing my insurance for pain.
Do I need an attorney, what is the worst and best possible outcome?
