NY speeding ticket from 7 years ago

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York

I am a Quebec resident, and I had recieved a speeding ticket 8 years ago while driving in NY state.

The ticket has never been paid and I dont remember anything about it.

My question is, if I travel to new york and i cross the border in the passenger seat not driving. Can they tell at the border that i have an unpaid ticket just by my canadian passport? or will i only be caught if i am caught driving in NY state.

Also if i get caught for some reason, could there be jail time for a ticket so old? how does it work, could i just pay the fine?

thanks

This is an EXCELLENT example of why we tell people NOT to ignore traffic violations, even if they feel they'll never be back!

Nope - I'm not from New York - stand by for more info from some of the people from that neck of the woods.

(Oh, and WE is us folks who advise people not to ignore tickets)

The federales man the border crossings not NY state police. Your questions really are (1) what kind of information do the feds have access to (i.e., do the states pass on information on unpaid tickets) and (2) what would they do if they knew that you had an unpaid ticket? Presumably they could deny you entry or inform NY state authorities.

I personally find it doubtful that the feds have information on unpaid state traffic violations but you never know. You might have better luck with this on an immigration board as these really are immigration and border control issues.
