Off Duty Police PowersWhat is the name of your state? KY Can an off duty police officer in their private vehicle who saw you speeding or driving recklessly have a ticket issued to you well after the act was observed based on him noting your license plate? |

| In most (probably all) states, sure. Just like anyone else, they can report a crime. They might have a hard time identifying the driver to the satisfaction of the court, but they can certainly try to investigate the matter and have a cite issued if your state permits it. - Carl

| How common is it for an off duty officer driving in their own vehicle to take the steps to issue a citation or investigate? He/she wasn't wasn't ran off the road. He/she was passed at a high speed at night and started flashing the high beams on and off. I'm not sure he was even an officer....just assuming the worst. If he was an officer, would he flash his lights in the given situation? Also, would they have to do this within a certain time frame? |

| An officer might flash their beams - who knows? It is NOT common for an officer to take the steps to cite for something off duty. Besides, chances are he couldn't read your plates, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. - Carl
