| | | Quebec Speeding Ticket question What is the name of your state? Quebec
A few years ago, I rec'd a $500 speeding ticket in quebec... and I never paid it (long story). They sent me an 'arrest warrant' in the mail stating I must serve 52 days in jail for not paying and that if I'm caught in Quebec I'll be arrested.
Well, I'm going to be moving to Quebec next month, so I'd like to pay the ticket... but don't know how/who to call. Any advice? |

Since you did not pay the ticket, or enter a plea, or show up for a court date, or contact the appropriate authorities in the appropriate amount of time, they obviously entered a judgement in your absence. They are not going to accept your attempt at payment of the fine.
You will not need an apartment for the first 52 days after you move to Quebec, accomodations have been arranged. |

OK, so your original post should have read as follows,
A few years ago, I rec'd a citation for speeding in quebec, I did show up for court, I was fined 500 Canadian dollars, ... and I never paid it (long story).
That changes everything! What you should do is go to the nearest RCMP station with a certified check or money order for 500 Canadian dollars, and the letter that you received in the mail, and they will let you pay the fine, no questions asked. |

So why the **** would I go to the RCMP regarding traffic matters? |

I am certain that the FBI would be most helpful in pointing me in the right direction, and I am certain that the RCMP could help you in the same way.

| | Actually, jstalin, the RCMP is not analogues to the US FBI so your comment was pretty stupid. The RCMP is much more analogues to the United States' various state police and state highway patrol agencies who do, in fact, have substantial control in matters of traffic law. So yes, I would as well, contact the RCMP if I received a Canadian traffic citation. BTW, to the person with the original problem regarding the 52 days in jail, why not just turn yourself into the Canadian police to serve your sentence as soon as you move to Quebec? This way you'll not only not have to pay the $500 fine, but you'll actually be ahead by the cost of a month and a half rent and living expenses. When you get lemons, make refreshing lemonade.

| | Actually you Do Not want to opt for the stay in the Quebec jail. They will now commute your sentence to extreme amounts of underpaid public servitude. You would be best to send some form of Traceable payment to the Securite Du Quebec.
see: http://www.msp.gouv.qc.ca./reinsertion/reinsertion_en.asp?txtSection=miliferm&txtCategorie=travaux_compensatoires
Or Pay your fine here:

Sincerely, a poor bast##d who owes them $1800. Count yourself lucky.
btw, don't forget to contact the SAAQ http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/ you will have to pay them to reinstate your driving priviledge in quebec as well
