Question about stop sign violation

I live in California and want to know if there is a specific distance from the curb that a stop sign needs to be posted from? I have noticed most stop signs are within 12-18 inches, I was ticketed for running a stop sign that was posted about 4-5 feet from the curb. thanks in advance.
