Received a speeding ticket in upstate NYWhat is the name of your state? New York On july 26th I received a speeding ticket on my way home to Long Island, NY from Cooperstown, NY. The Officer caught me doing 87 in a 65(I-87) with laser. I was with my girlfriend who has very bad menstrual pains and we were rushing to the next rest area because she was having an attack. She is on pain medication and will have a Dr. note to prove this. She told the officer her situation and asked if there was any way to get it lowered and he said if we came up to court we could "perhaps work something out with the judge." The court is 2 1/2 hours from where I live but my girlfriend is planning on coming with me with the Dr. note. I'm 18 years old and the only record I have is a 2pt Failure to Signal violation I received in the winter. Now, originally, this was a speeding ticket, but a lawyer got it reduced to a failure to signal. So I'm not sure what my record shows. There was no supporting deposition attached with the ticket(it was hand written, not computerized). I've heard that I may be able to get it thrown out like this. Is that true? Anyway, I plan on going up there and basically saying that I admit to speeding and I understand what I did was wrong but under the circumstance, there was an open road, and my girlfriend was in a lot of pain and I had to get her to the next rest stop as soon as possible. I'll state that I am entering my freshman year of college in the fall( which i am) and can really not afford to have any increased insurance fees. I would be willing to pay a non-moving ticket or go to driving school, or anything to help, but I really will have a hard time affording the insurance. Please help, any guidance is appreciated..court date is aug 15. thanks, sage |

You obviously drive too fast, just like most teenagers, as evidenced by your two speeding tickets. Do yourself a favor and slow down. |

| Thanks for your comments. After my first speeding ticket I had slowed down somewhat. I wasn't perfect but I had been pretty good for the past 7-8 months until this speeding ticket when i was going about 90 because I had to get her to a rest area. I suppose she could have waited but I made the wrong decision, obviously. Any more thoughts? |

| Yes. When you get to court If the DA wont let you off with a lesser charge, like equipment, Ask for a postponement and get a lawyer. ( preferably a local one) That was 22 miles over the limit.... I haven't kept up on NYS law. Would they even let you keep your license? The points on an 18 year old will put your insurance through the roof. |

| Thank you. Very helpful. I will certainly do that. But would it be too late to ask for a postponement by the time I know if they will reduce it or not? |
