reckless driving violation

My mother is 72. She had fasted as required for 12 hours (she is diabetic) before going to the doctor for an appointment. She became dizzy and disoriented on the way and made a wrong turn, ending up out in the country. She disregarded a school bus stop sign and drove on by the bus, which we all agree was a possible dangerous situation. She does not have a good recollection of the incident other than remembering passing a bus, not remembering the stop sign. Someone got her license # and called the school. The school was not going to pursue it, however, the police officer cited her for reckless driving and a court date has been set. She has a lawyer and he is telling her to plead not guilty. I have not spoken with the lawyer but would like information and advice on what to expect. I do not want her to lose her license (or worse) although we understand that she broke a law. Should she plead guilty or not guilty? What could the penalty be either way?

Maybe she should hire an attorney.

Why are you second guessing the lawyer? If he thinks he can get her off, then what's the worry? At worst she gets the max penalty, plus some court costs and attorney fees. Somehow I can't see them doing this to a 72 year old woman for passing a school bus. If you'll click on the link to the right entitled "State Law Center", then pick your state you can try to look up the statute. I'd try but you didn't list what state you're in.
