red-light camera violation in a rental, CA

I was recently photographed rolling through a red light in San Francisco. Since I am not the registered owner, couldn't I dispute the rental car company's information? That is really the only thing that convicts me and my experience with car rental companies has been that they always screw something up.
I would love to write a letter to the company disputing their information, pay them the fine amount and let them pay the city as a point can't go on a rental car company's driving record. I do not have problem with paying the fine though I have a big problem with the violation going on my record or going to traffic school.

[rhetorical]
Is it really asking people too much to do the most rudimentary research before asking the same questions, over and over and over?
