Question

rejected to continue trial

My girlfriend was pulled over a couple of months ago for speeding in CT. First off, her veh was not capable of the speed on the ticket and was pulled over after another veh. passed her on the right, then slammed on it's brakes. She is truly not guilty. She had filed for a continuance for the first court date because she was out of state at that time. She works in retail and is not allowed any time off or schedule changes during the holiday season, failing to show up at a scheduled time results in termination. She called the court back today because she was scheduled for a day when she is working and was refused a continuance, even after explaining her work situation, because the officer was already issued a summons to court. Is there anything she could do to get around this. She can not afford a lawyer and does not know what to do.

A court appearance takes priority to work schedule.

Afford a lawyer. They can go to court for you and it's quite possible they can do something about the ticket. If it's completely impossible, have her tell work what's going on. If they fire her for appearing in court, she may be able to sue. Besides, if she's a decent employee they won't fire her no matter what they say. Just my opinion, but in my experience employers bark an awful lot before they ever bite.
