Right to know my violation?

In California, do I have a right to know what law I have violated *before* the officer tickets me?

I had a situation recently where the officer explained the law I had supposedly violated *while* writing up my ticket, thereby not even giving me a chance to explain my side of the story.

The court room is the place to explain your side of the story, not the side of the road.

I recently moved from California and the officer only needs to explain why he stopped you (his probable cause) however if you were stopped at a checkpoint and violations were noticed than no they do not need to explain what you were cahrged with until you are given your citation.
