scooter codes

Arizona
Phoenix Metro area

If this isn't the best spot for this post, please let me know and I will move it.

I am getting a small electric scooter and I would like to know what the regulations are regarding them. Mostly, I would like to know:

Am I required to register it, and does it require a special license?

Am I permited to ride it on streets?

Am I permited to ride it on sidewalks?

Will I need to carry insurance for it?

It is a 750W electric scooter, similar in form to the Razor scooters popular among children a few years ago. I may also be operated by human power alone. I intend to use it to move around on the college campus. If you need additional information, please ask.

Jenny,

You DEFINITELY want to check with your local DMV AND any local laws.

I know here in Onondaga County in Upstate New York, they just passed a law that those electric scooters can ONLY be used on your own private property. The NYS DMV will NOT register them because they do not meet safety requirements, and insurance companies will not insure them - so they are not permitted on roads. However, the county said that since they are motorized they cannot be used on sidewalks because they are a hazard to pedestrians and bikers. Basically - you can only ride them in your own driveway.

So, definitely check on the local laws in your area - I would also contact your college campus police/security, to see if they have any restrictions against them.
