| Speeding Ticket Question State: Georgia
City: Lavonia
Ok, here's the story. I had been on the road all of a quarter mile when I came to a curve in the road. The curve turns pretty much 90 degrees to the left has about a 10-20 yard straight, then back 90 degrees right. In this area, the posted speed limit is 25 MPH.
Like I siad I left the driveway about 1/4 mile from the curve. I may have been doing 30 at that point because I drive a manual transmission Ford Bronco (fullsize), and it's difficult to get to 25 exactly and hold it because it's between gears. I got to the turn and a cop pulls out behind me when i go into the straight. I got through the second turn and a few yards up he pulls me over. He informed me that I was doing 48 in a 25. Not only is that untrue, but it would be impossible for a 5500 pound vehicle to navigate those turns at 48 MPH without some serious problems.
He never said he got me on the radar gun, as the ticket indicates, but did mention the calibrations and all that. Later he said "I'm used to judging speed, and when you went I pulled behind you in the straight there you were going 48 mph.". Does this mean he was just "judging" my speed? Is it legal in GA for an officer to pace you with his car? If I was doing 48 that means his car can amazingly hit over 48 in about 10 yards because he was gaining on me.
He advised me to fight the ticket and talk to the judge about getting it so it won't affect my driving record, but I would still pay the fine. That sounds fishy to me, like it is just for revenue. Plus can cops give legal advice?
Also on the ticket the location is wrong. The location listed is not where he said I was speeding.
That's about it. Any help would be appreciated.
