Speeding ticket without radar or laser

What is the name of your state? NY

Hi. I was wondering if it was possible to get a speeding ticket if the officer did not use radar or laser. If a cop is just sitting there and someone speeds past him, can he turn on his lights because the guy was obviously speeding, even though he doesn't know how fast he was really going?

Just a quick question. Thanks to anyone that answers it.

**A: yes and as further proof, when the officer drives to catch the speeder and his own speedometer goes past the posted speed limit, he has evidence of speeding without need for a radar or laser equipment.

HG, you know I like you and your answers, but re-read your post.

The cops speedometer would always go over the posted speedlimit if he had to go after the speeder.

I think you were trying to say that if he got behind the speeder and paced him over the speed limit?

**A: not if the speeder slowed down to under the speed limit before the officer put his light and siren on to follow him.

**A: yeah that's it.

Thanks. Just curious. So then a laser defuser serves no purpose if they can pull you over anyway?

I know that in some states they get certified to visually judge your speed, ( usually give or take 3 miles per hour) BUT I"ve been told they are supposed to back it up by either clocking you or using radar/Laser
