speedlimit signs, when are they effective and errors on ticketsnew york state: when does a street sign become 'effective'. In a recent traffic stop the officer said I was doing 57 in a 45, but he was behind the 55mph sign that was posted. So when is this effective, when I see the sign or when . Does anyone have reference to the NY law. Also I've heard that when an error is on a ticket, you can get out of it. Under what NY law would I go to look for this information. Thanks for your assistance Paul Last edited by krempap; 10-26-2001 at 02:29 PM. |

| The speed limit becomes effective at the sign, not before. There is no law, it is common sense. Do you stop the second you see a stop sign or do you stop at the sign? The only errors on a citation that could be considered as a cause for dismissal would be incorrect location of infraction, listed law does not match violation, and in some cases, incorrect drivers license number. Any other errors are generally not enough to have a citation dismissed but that would be up to the judge. |

| Well I don't stop when I first see the sign, but I do slow down. Hence when I see the speed limit sign, I start to accelerate. |
