I have been pulled over three times in the last month and was twice issued tickets for no insurance. I was stopped in the state of Kentucky where insurance is required. I, however, live and work in the state of Tennessee where auto insurance is not required. What can I do about this situation? I have two court dates within the next 30 days to address these "violations". Each time i was pulled over the officer gave me some bull**** excuse about why. Twice it was supposed speeding and once was for no seat belt(which I had on at the time). First I'll address the speeding allegations. I was doing no more than 5 over th first time and was dead on the speed limit the second time, but each time I was told I was doing anything from 15 to 25 over the posted limit. Granted my car is 15 years old and my speedometer might be off. However, I checked my speedometer against my brother's 2000 ranger and he said it was accurate up to 85 mph, the upper limit of the speedometer. Next, the seat belt. This one is good. I drive a convertable. My seat belt comes out of the trim panel behing me at a piont almost six inches lower than my shoulder providing a really snug fit. Secondly, my car has an extremely small rear window. It is completly impossible to see if I have my seat belt on from behind the car during the daytime let alone at night. The fact that the officer was in the lane next to me anywhere from 50 to 150 feet behind me AND moving at the same speed makes it even more unlikely. I believe I was pulled over because my car is a beat up peice of crap and I just happenned to have license plates broadcasting that I'm from a state where insurance is not required. Easy ticket to fill the quota on the last night of the shortest month of the year. What I want to know is because of the fact that I neither live nor work in the state of Kentucky, am I required to have auto insurance to pass through or visit that state? As I said, I have two court dates within 30 days(today is 3-1-00) and would like to get these tickets dismissed if possible. Each one is for $500. Much more than my car is worth I might add. Thank you for your time and all the help you can possibly give. |
