I am a city employee and one of my duties is to drive around to different departments to pick up and retrieve important documents. Recently, my driver's license was expiring so I went to the local California DMV for a renewal. When I got to the desk, the clerk suspected that I wasn't me(apparently because I look younger than my age listed on my license) looked up my number and found out that someone un benounced to me, had took a photo and registered for a duplicate license under my name and number. I was then directedto the investigator's office and despite me showing my City I.D., credit card, college ID, and darn near everything in my wallet was treated like i was the imposter. They told me to "come back when I have my Birth Certificate" to verify that I'm me. Four days later after diggin' in the crates, and boxes for a copy of my birth certificate, and begging for an entire day off from my boss, I went back to the investigators after making an appointment w/them and was still treated like the actual criminal. First off, the investigator that I initially spoke to was no where to be found, so this oter guy reluctantly came out to greet us at the front desk. This rude fellow told us that "What I'm supposed to do is tell you to come back another day because we're so busy." Even though we were the only people in the entire office waiting for service, and I was told to come back this "Friday morning" Five hours later, I still was not given any answers as to how this guy could have got a license as smooth as silk under my name six months ago 9Feb. 00) When I was given the third degree when i came to get a renewal under my actual name. I requested a new D.L. number and was not given one even though this criminal who doesn't look anything like me could be running up DUI's and speeding tickets, and God knows what else under my number which could come back and haunt me by getting me fired @ my job. All I was told was that maybe after the investigation is over, I could maybe get a new number. I would like to sue the California DMV under the grounds of negligence, and discrimination. I'm not a lawyer though, does anyone think/know whether or not I have any grounds for a lawsuit for these grievences?
