Stolen Identity

What is the name of your state? California

Okay heres the deal. I am a resident of the State Of California and have been so since 1987. I am a college student here and California and have never left the state since 1989. Anyway a friend of mine moved to Michigan a few years ago and then I come to find out that he has used my identity when he gets pulled over by the cops. He got pulled over three different times and he used my California drivers license number on each occasion telling the officer that he does not have an I.D on him but he can give him "his" drivers information and the cop says okay and allows him off with a ticket under my name. Anyway my license in California got suspended as a result so I took a week off from school, got a loan to buy an airline ticket and flew to Michigan to get the charges dismissed. One of the tickets was in Royal Oaks Michigan and lucky for me the Prosecutor was in his office at the time I went to court so I proved to him that it wasnt me and he dropped the case. Unfortunatly, the prosecutor for the other two tickets (both in dearborn heights) was not available when I went to court (where I was arresseted and made to take a mug shot) so I had to reschedule a court date for june 26th and 27th for the other two cases. Now I can't afford to keep going back to michigan to deal with this case so is there anyway I can contact the Prosecutor in Dearborn Heights Michigan to get him/Her to drop the cases? I have proof that I was in California at the time but I dont know what rights I have to give it to the prosecutor since im in California. Does anyone know what I can do? I can't afford an attorney so thats out of the question. Thanks everyone for reading this.

I was not aware that CA would suspend your license for not paying out of state speeding tickets. The CA DOT claims they will not. First you need to file a police report locally and in Michigan, fill out the Identity Theft form at the government website, and have your drivers license number changed. Talk to supervisor at the DOT. You also need to flag your credit report. Send in all of this information with the proof you have that you were in CA to the prosecutor requesting dismissal. This could be a notarized statement from the school registrar, employer with copy of check stub, etc. You need to provide him with all of the information you have regarding the other person.
