suspended license

What is the name of your state? WA
I was pulled over by an officer that said he ran my plates and noticed I had a suspended license. Can the police just randomly run your plates without an initial traffic violation?

My response:

Sure! Why do you think your plates are on your car? For good looks?

You're undoubtedly confusing "running plates" with "probable cause". Probable cause is only for initial stops and detention - - NOT for running plates.

Running plates dates back to the olden days. It used to be called running a horse's ass. Luckily, the invention of the car made the phrase more politically correct.

Why are you driving if your license is suspended? That is against the law.

funny thing...

didn't know it was suspended. Somewhere between my insurance company and the dept. of licensing they "misplaced" my sr-22. I asked it to be filed when I signed up, The DOL let me know they hadn't received it; I asked them to send it again, they said it was taken care of....nope. Then I got pulled over on the way to work because the officer ran my plates and saw that I had a suspended license. but third times a charm as Geico and the WA DOL have finally been able to master that facinating technology know as the fax machine. That's $150 later for towing, $50 to get the license back, and we'll see if the judge sees things my way. Good times.
