Question

Tailgating Cops?

What is the name of your state? Maryland

I was driving on a rural route with a police car behind me. He sped up until he was tailgating me, without lights or sirens on, so I just kept accelerating. He did not attempt to pass me but just kept going faster and soon I was going 20-25mph over the posted speed limit, and then he pulled me over for speeding. He said that I should have pulled over instead of going faster, even though he didn't have sirens or lights on. Am I at fault? Is it legal for police to do this?

My response:

Yes, you're at fault for speeding.

The Rules of the Road dictate that you either slowly come to a gentle stop, or you signal and move to your right, to allow the other driver, any driver, to go around.

If you were driving a Ferrari, would that have justified your speed of 150 miles per hour? No? Then, if that's the case, where's the speed cutoff point where it becomes unsafe speed?

You had a choice. You just made the wrong choice.

yes you are at fault.

however... "is it legal for police to do this" ?

i would say no. his siren wasn't on, so he is just like any other motorist..

unless i'm wrong.

take this issue to court. rural roads are dangerous enough to travel on without worrying about who is behind you. as a female delivering newspapers at 3 am i too would have sped up until i was sure of being in a well-lit area.
