ten year old ticket

I live in Houston, TX

Ten years ago I got a ticket in Sweetwater TX and never did pay it. A couple days ago I got a letter from a collection agent saying a warrant was issued for my arrest and to send $200. I guess my questions are:
Why did it take them so long to issue a warrant?
How do I check if there is actually a warant out?
What happens if I pay it and still get arrested? i.e.- I mailed the check but it hadn't been received yet.
thanks

Would you please email me your phone number so I can call and say you owe $200 for another old ticket?

I'll give you the address to send it to.

The warrant goes on your record as forever until you pay. Of course, there is an arrest warrant if you dont pay.

I don't know. It was so long ago. I was pretty broke back then, I guess.

UPDATE:
I was pulled over and given a speeding ticket on Thursday. The officer didn't mention anything about having a warrant. Boy was I scared. I was driving my company truck at the time. I'm thinking maybe the city of Sweetwater is just bluffing.

No, Sweetwater isn't bluffing. Police officers don't always check for warrants/run someone's driver's license. Get it taken care of.
