| | ticketed for giving the finger NJ
I know, I know how stupid. I was driving on the parkway with my boyfriend following me home. I switched to the left lane to pass (properly, not speeding, not going slow, using my signal) and there was a car in that lane, but pretty far back. As soon as I got into the lane the car behind me high beamed me. I assumed it was my boyfriend just playing around because it was so uncalled for and as I was finished passing I stuck my middle finger out and switched back into my lane. Lucky me it was a police officer-state trooper. He pulled me over, I said I didn't know why he was pulling me over and he gave me a ticket for improper hand signal. I want to know if in NJ you could be ticketed for that. I also wanted to know if improper hand signal would be the correct violation. Improper hand signal to me sounds like a moving violation. The trooper saw that my boyfriend was following me I explained to him that I thought it was my boyfriend behind me, I know it was stupid, but I have a clean driving record and would like to keep it that way. If this is an incorrect violation, i will go to court and fight it. can anyone HELP! me? |

| | | oh man, that is hilarious.. Sorry it happened to you. My mom did that once and she went to court and it was dropped. But then again, that was 15 years ago in a small Alabama town with one police officer. Good luck to you! |

| | | It's creative, but I can't imagine that it would hold up in court.
If the officer were smart he might change the cite form an improper hand signal to your making an unsafe lane change ... or something of that nature.

| | | Playing the Court System You are awesome! But seriously, did you sign the ticket as an admission of guilt? The reason I ask is because, in New Mexico, you have two choices when you get pulled over: Court or pay the fine (guilty). If you intend on taking it to court, I hope you signed up for the court option.
Secondly, if you're state is like mine, the DWI/DUI craze may have your state trooper too busy to show up for the court and you may get off. I said MAY, sorry to all the cops who post here, but I gotta play the odds.
Good luck and take care Jersey Girl |

| | | I wouldn't call the action, "Awesome", as people are killed for this sort of thing. I knew a woman who was shot and killed for flashing her highbeams at someone ... I know of people run off the road and then shot for flipping people off ... I actually witnessed a case where a kid cracked the skull of another kid with a skateboard because the victim actually had the audacity to "LOOK" at him. Yep, when he asked why he did it, he replied, "He looked at me." ... broke the skateboard over the other kids' skull - cracking the skull as well.
The OP was lucky it WAS a cop and not a deranged psycho with a chip on their shoulder.

| | | Carl, Carl, Carl You generally give good, genuine advice in the forums, so I'll give you the respect you deserve and say you are right. However, I gotta say one thing, maybe a single mocha instead? |

But, apparently, this may not be the case in the state of NM ... but, I believe in NJ signing the citation is acknowledgement and not an admission.
