Traded in car before taking care of fix it ticket

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Hello, I received a fix it ticket for the middle brake light being out on my old Corolla and proceeded to trade it in for a better car before taking care of the ticket (i.e. I didn't change out the bulb etc). With the little knowledge I had, I did look and was unable to find out what the cost would be to not pay the ticket, but thought it would be $25 because that was the only price listed. I went to the clerk yesterday and found out it's actually $164. I would like to know if there's any valid argument a judge might listen to if I set a court date or if I'm stuck paying the $164 rather than the $25 I thought it would be? It's been a few months now and I haven't heard back from the dealer about it either.

I'm really pissed at myself for this because I know ignorance is no excuse, but still feel like I'm getting screwed. Any help would be extremely appreciated! Thank you!

The lower amount was what it would cost if you obtained proof of correction.

Thank you. Why don't they list both costs online or in the letter they send me? I would have been more motivated to fix it sooner and/or before I sold the car. Pardon if the question sounds retorical, but it'd be nice to know.

The notices I have seen do include notices that explain that. Unfortunately, most people do not seem to read the entire notice.

This may be a kinda pricey lesson for you, then.

Next time, just get it fixed and present the court with a signed copy of the proof of correction.
