in the state of alabama is it legal for the speed limit to drop from 55mph to 30mph in one step or does the county have to drop the limit in 10mph increments? i was recently ticketed for traveling 49mph as i was coming from a 55mph zone to a 30mph zone. i was within the posted 30mph zone when i was clocked at 49mph coming directly out of the 55mph zone.

Was there any kind of warning that the speed limit was being reduced? I have driven most of the Western U.S. and almost always when the speed limit goes down there are signs that say "speed zone ahead" or "reduce speed ahead". And they always have a small yellow warning sign below it stating what the new speed limit is. A vehicle traveling at 55 should be able to comfortably slow to 30 in about 100 feet. You should check to see if there are any warning signs about the speed reduction on the road and if there are none you could use that as your defense and state that you were slowing to the posted speed at the time. I have never seen the speed limit drop in 10 mph increments. In a small town in Montana the speed limit use to go from unrestricted to 25 mph in about 50 feet. The road looked like an airport runway from all the skid marks of folks trying to get slowed down. It was one of only two times I have seen police parking lots along side the road just for writing tickets.
