I received a speeding ticket in the state of Georgia. When I asked to see the radar, they stated that "since they use Laser radar they do not have to do that, that there is no discretion in this radar because it is calibrated every evening." Is this true? Also, I have heard that Lasor radar is only really accurate up to 600 feet, they where 1100 feet away when they tracked me. What is the truth in both of these questions?

The lazar radar gun can read speeds up to 2 miles as long as the road is level. Unlike the older style of radar guns, it cannot read speeds on hills and inclines accurately unless the officer is at the same plane. The officer was correct in not allowing you to see the radar gun also. The Supreme Court ruled in 1994 that the officers safety is more important than allowing a suspect to view the radar gun. To view the radar gun, the officer would have to allow access to the front seat of the patrol car. This is not allowed for safety reasons.
