Officer gave me a ticket for "unlawful speedometer" as opposed to a speeding ticket. Claimed he was doing me a favor as a speeding ticket would have points while "unlawful speedometer" is just a fine. What exactly is "unlawful speedometer"? Was the officer in fact doing me a favor??

Seems like he WAS doing you a favor. You got a ticket for defective equipment instead of a moving violation:
