unlicensed driverI've been an unlicensed driver in New Jersey for 3 1/2 years. I had a valid out of state license (Indiana), but NJ law stipulates that once you move to NJ you have 60 days to purchase an exam permit for an NJ license. I was pulled over for an illegal left turn many weeks ago and the officer summoned me to court for the unlicensed driver status. Yesterday I got an NJ license. My question is: how should I conduct myself in court, now that I have corrected the problem? I know that there is a surcharge for three years for the violation. Is there any possibility that this will be dropped by the judge? Thank you. |

I thank soHello, of course not being from where you are I don't really know how your court system works. In the Stae of Oregon as a Law Enforcement Officer, I know that it is a common practic for the courts to more often then not drop citations that have been handled by the violator getting his license prior to his of her court appearance. In fact we have always told people that we have cited, that if they go and get their license prior to your court date, they will usually drop the citation. Now this does not always happen, however it is in your favor to have done just that. it can't hurt, and I would bet it will help you when you appear in court. good luck. |
