Unsafe Speed Ticket PAWhat is the name of your state? PA I live in NJ but travel in the Philadelphia, PA area daily for school. I was pulled over the other day on 95 by a Philadelphia officer. He came to my car and asked what the black box on my passenger visor was. I told him a radar detector. He took my info to his car and came back 8 minutes later. He gave me a ticket for driving at an unsafe speed, 83.1 mph to be exact. I know I didn't go above 80 because I looked down and knew to lay off since I saw him about 1/4 mile away. My radar detector didn't go off either. On the ticket he wrote that my speed was checked my "truck" or "track." His writing is sloppy. How could he know my speed? He was stopped when I passed and I slowed down to 60 mph when I passed and stayed at that speed. Is there anything that can be done to avoid points, since I am already going to automatically get 2 on top anything because NJ sucks? thanks |

| Your radar detector wouldn't have gone off, because municipal police officers in Pennsylvania cannot use RADAR for speed enforcement. He likely used VASCAR, Tracker (which are essentially the same thing), ESP, or an Accutrack type device. VASCAR and Tracker are electronic speed detection devices that are tied into the vehicle's transmission to measure distance. They measure your travel time between two points on the roadway and calculate your feet per second into miles per hour. Accutrack and similar devices are essentially the same, except they are handheld and require manual input of the distance. ESP is an infrared device that measures your travel time between two infrared beams crossing the roadway.
