| Three weeks ago I was given a ticket for 'running a red light", in Hillsborough, NJ. I'm going to court over it, but I don't really know how to prepare myself. I've been reading self-help law books, they seem good but I'm feeling overwhelmed. I'm sending a discovery letter to the police agency, I don't know if I should ask all the details(i.e., what was officer's location when he first saw my vehicle, how far he paced me, etc.) What really bothers me is I'm not getting help from anyone they just think I'm a loon and I'm wasting my time. They have no faith in me, and think I should just pay the fine (a ridiculously large sum of $$). My next step is to visit a law library, I have a bad feeling I won't know how to find what I'm looking for there, and anyone I ask will refuse to help me. Have others been thru this experience? What was the outcome? |

| On what basis are you seeking dismissal of the citation? Did you not run a red light? Was the light yellow when you entered the intersection? Is the ticket incorrect in some manner? When you go to court, it will be your word against the report written by the officer and defended by a representitive of the prosecuting attorneys office of the jurisdiction in which you were cited. And believe me, traffic court judges have heard every excuse known to man. And unless you are knowledgable of police lingo and abbreviations, the police report will probably not do you any good. I would suggest a consultation with a lawyer, many give the first half hour free.
