| Weird speeding fine in construction, NJ What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? New Jersey
I was driving along a 10 some mile stretch of construction in NJ (295). There is construction in about 2 miles of road and the rest is marked off as construction. I am out of state (VA). I got pulled over for going 75 in a 45 construction zone. The officer checked of the box on my ticket for 30 over the limit, but wrote that I was going 75 in a 55 on the ticket. 55 is the non-construction speed limit in that area. Construction already gets me double the fine (signs indicate the max is $506, and I think I'm there). NJ's online ticket system and the court clerk have said that my record indicates 20-24 over the limit (39:4-98.24). I said "huh" but kept my mouth shut afterwards.
So now I'm worried about being blind-sided when and if they realize that I was doing 30 over the limit. Has this happened to anyone else? Is this the normal way they charge you for construction speeding?
I think I can talk a 20 down to something less... but if I'm charged with a 30, I'm gonna want a lawyer. I've got 8 years of perfect driving and pictures of the "construction zone" (which is quite finished), but the VA DMV told me they would count a charge of 20 over as reckless driving and it would be on my record for 11 years. This will hurt background checks and my security clearance (both of which are needed for jobs around here). |
