Band Cover question, please help

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? WASHINGTON STATE

Hello, my name is Sam and im in a band (the redones) that going to be making a demo CD in a few days. We are NOT a cover band and all of our material is original except one. There's one of our songs that I arranged from an old old church song I use to sing in middle school and our band made it distinctive. Would I be able to use our arrangement in the demo without getting sued? Becuase I KNOW people have done it before (Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder was redone by the Red Hot Chili Peppers....Knockin' on heavens door etc..)

The only information I know is that the song states Copyright 1980.
