Is it legal for a signed musician to pay someone to purchase their single?

What is the name of your state? NY

This may seem a strange scenario, but please bear with me.

Is it legal for a signed musician to pay people to buy their own songs? For example, let's say a signed musician has a single available for $5 and they say to someone "After you buy my single from <your favorite MP3 store>, I will give you $10 cash".

Does this seem legal? Additionally, could the musician be banned from the Billboard Singles Charts?

Many thanks

Nothing illegal about it. He's just a marketer trying to increase his sales. How many people did he ask to do this--two people or two thousand people?

Thanks for the info. I believe they're asking around 500 people. Do you reckon asking that number of people pushes it into dodgy territory?
