Protecting your new magazine concept and idea....

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York City

I'm startiing a magazine and I would like to know the route to take in legally protecting the idea and concept of the magazine. Also, approximately how much would this cost?

It would be near impossible to protect the concept and idea of a magazine. Visual layout, the actual content could be protected by copyright. The title subject to trademark.

If I wanted to make a sports photography magazine and run one issue a year with bathing suit models, there's not much Time Warner could do about it.
