Questions on starting an online forum

I am looking at starting an online discussion forum for local high school sports. I would also like to have a discussion forum on college and pro sports. Are there any legal rules that I would need to look into for college and pro sports? I will not be putting any logos on myself, anything in this forum would be user initiated. What are the general rules I should follow on this??

Legal issues are pretty much the least of your concerns. The biggest issues you will have are:

1. People posting copyright information on your system. There's a pretty safe defense for this:

2. People posting defamatory information. This has ended up in lawsuits involving the board owner in the past. How to avoid this is less clear, but setting up a moderation or at least complaint process similar to the DMCA rules above may help.

I agree with Flying Ron that content needs to be monitored.

You should have a clear list of rules, a disclaimer, and, again, careful monitoring of your site to prevent obscene and defamatory content from being posted and to prevent the content from infringing on copyright, trademark or privacy rights. You must be especially careful with trademark rights of college and pro sports teams, as these rights are vigorously protected.

You have your specialized forum topic already, which is important. You could check out phpBB • Creating Communities Worldwide and vBulletin - Instant Community for forum script. You will need a webhost that can accommodate your bandwidth and web space needs. And you will need a good marketing scheme to draw people to your site.

Because you will want your forum to be user-friendly, do some research by checking out other forums, to see how they operate. Adopt for your own site the features you most like.

Once your site has a good draw, you can look into adding ads to help pay for your site.

Good luck.
