Royalty payment for this copyrighted music? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York; let's worry only about the U.S. for now. A composer has written and copyrighted 20 minutes of orchestral and vocal music to be played by a professional symphony orchestra. There will be two performances in front of a paying audience numbering 1,000 persons each concert, paying an average of $40 per ticket. What is the royalty payment due the composer? |

| What ever is negotiated between the composer and whoever is putting on the concert. There is no statutory required rate here. If the composer has signed on with a PRO (like ASCAP, etc...) they have their own way of computing the rates.

The composer is a member of ASCAP ...though a fairly freshly-minted one. Does anyone know the nominal ASCAP rate for the scenario described in the first post? |

| When you contacted ASCAP, what did they say?
