Street photography - consent rules

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Washington State

I want to do a series of street photography to show at a gallery. I would probably be taking photographs of strangers and they may be the "subject" of the photograph. I would sell a limited number of prints to private individuals and would not be selling to magazines, companies etc. The photos might be used in promotion for the gallery show though and later added to my online portfolio. If the photos are taken in a public place that allows photography can I use them without written permission? Is a verbal okay good enough? (I would get this no matter what, just for ethical reasons)

Could I enter the photographs in magazine contests without permission?

I am an amatuer photographer, currently, just wantng to build my portfolio without breaking any laws!

-Thanks!
