Tour Manager Requires Copy of Passport

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

Hey,
I am being booked for a tour in Europe and Africa and my tour manager asked me to send a copy of my passport to him. I assume this will be available to all promoters at their request.

I've been doing some research on this and it seems to me that identity theft through the copy of one's passport alone is not possible. Name, address, birthday and country of citizenship are already available to the tour manager. The only new piece of information the passport copy would make available is my passport number.

According to my reading so far, the passport number is just a randomly generated number (according to when the passport was made) and is not harmful if shared.

Is there anyone that is able to verify this.
