average price on starting an LLC

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I was told by an attorney it would cost my investment group $2500 to start a LLC. Is that the average price or am i being ripped off?

That's akin to OJ saying that the knife manufacturer should have never sold him the knife because, after all, they should have expected him to use it.

I've been looking into an LLC or FLP for family estate and investment purposes recently. I had one recommendation last month for an LLC w/price of 1K, which surprised me quite frankly as I thought it would be more than that. I'm slightly concerned that if I get what I pay for, I won't get much for only 1K. More discussion to understand the details, and other quotes are needed. There were other trust documents that I was contracting to have updated, so there may be some bundling going on with that price (making it incrementally lower).

i dont wanna look for the cheapest deal because in some cases you do get wat you pay for so but at the sametime im not trying to spend as much as possible..the main question is if 2500$ is average cost to start up a LLC and if not what is the range i should be looking for?

I have set up many corporations, LLCs and LPs. I have done it for clients, too. You can do it yourself if you know how. But I would caution you to be careful if you're a novice. You can get forms from your choice state of incorporation usually from the Secretary of State's (or Corporations Division's) website.

There are many tax and non-tax issues to address before you form a new business entity. You choices can have a long-lasting effect on your business, associates, family, taxes, etc. Choose wisely.

If you hire a "mill" to form your company for you, you will likely pay from a few hundred dollars to a small fortune. And, you may only get a nice looking binder with your filed articles and a bunch of blank forms that you might not know what to do with. For example, your corporation will need to adopt bylaws and hold its organizational meetings, elect directors and officers, and issue the shares. Can you do that yourself? If not, then you need help. If your lawyer does it for you, you will pay lawyer rates; so, depending upon what he does for you, yes, it could be $2,500. Or more.

If you form an LLC, can you write an approprriate operating agreement for your new business enterprise? If not, you'll have to pay someone to do it for you. And, you should have an operating agreement.

The point is, filing with the state is only the beginning for your new company. There are formalities that must be attended to or you could lose your "corporate veil" - this is not a good thing.

I offer a free 5-part email series entitled "What You Must Know Before You Incorporate." Even if you hire professional help, you would be better off having at least a cursory understanding of the issues, choices and options to consider. Find my free email series at Incorporation911.com.

All the best!
