I am going to start an e-business (service only)to be conducted from my home in California. I will, I hope, be dealing with people around the country and the world. I have been advised (by the legally naive)that I can incorporate in Nevada and avoid and avoid California taxes and business hassels. What do you think?

Taxes, nope. Business hassles, possibly.

Your tax base will be the address where you perform or provide services and you will have to pay the local taxes.

If what you think were true, the major retailers would all license there and exempt having to pay the local (City, County, State) or income taxes in California!!

The only reason that corporations incorporate in remote locations (Delaware?) is for the provisions of that states corporate laws, not for tax purposes.
