copyright law for phrases or proverbs

I live in California, and I would like to start a business that would utilize common phrases or expressions and proverbs. There are some quotations I am interested in as well. How do I avoid copyright infringement?

It is very hard to successfully copyright common phrases, and they may be in hte public domain. But some of them may be TRADEMARKED. For example, the owners of this board would probably not tolerate your use of Free Advice .....
