i am starting a small home business that provides different services, and sells merchandise online. I have a name for the company, and am working on a website. The name of the company is not taken as I checked on several websites. Can I start using my company name before any legal trademark/copyright/or patent? Or must I make it legal first? Do I really need to take legal steps if my business continues to be small?

Yes, you need a business license from your city hall and you need to check the zoning in your area to make sure you are allowed to operate a home business.
