What is the name of your state? Michigan
I have a salesperson licence and am going to start selling houses for a builder.
I am not an employee of his company. Do I need or should I get a dba? I plan on
doing a lot of my own advertising. Would it help on my taxes? Thanks

A DBA doesn't usually have anything to do with taxes. It is mostly used when a company wants to do business under another name, but still stay under the umbrella (and often TIN) of the "main" company. Is this a sole proprietorship? Are you using your SSN for the TIN?
