I was mistakenly sent a check from Dow Jones Co. for $500 in June 1999 and I cashed it assuming it was payment for some freelance journalism I had done for them. Last week they sent me a letter asking me to pay it back. What are my rights?

My response:

From a legal standpoint, yes. There was a mutual mistake, and you know, from a review of your own invoices, that the money is not yours. The real question is, will Dow Jones Co. take any action? Unlikely. The amount is too small.

However, don't expect to do any more work for them in the future if you don't return it. Follow your conscience.
