Help starting up a business

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

I need to start a legal business. I am going to be doing e-commerce. Pretty much Ill be selling things over the internet via various websites. In order for me to establish relationships with wholesalers they require that I have a legal business and a TAX ID.

As I have researched this i am not sure if I should start a corporation or a LLC. I wont have any employees and it will just be me running this from out of my home. I do want to be protected in case any customer gets injured/sick from any sort of product I may sell.

It seems like i should start up a LLC correct?
