What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Kansas

Hi I am curious,
I am starting a Web design firm that will be run strictly through the web.

What legal things do I need to set up for my business?

I will be taking checks and credit but not through the internet so I am sure I will have to have a tax ID but how do i obtain?

Is there anything else I should do?
